About This Quote

He is a magical lord as we all desired, and magical things have sought him from over there, and they all obey his hests. It is so," said all but Gazic. And Gazic rose up in a pause of their gladness. "Many strange things," he said, "have entered our village, coming from over there.

And it may be that human folk are best, and the ways of the fields we know." In this quote from The Faraway Tree , Eustace Clarence Scrubb is reading a story to his family about a spider who builds a house out of straw. The spider takes some very unusual measures to do this, including stealing a caravan of animals that carry him across the desert – with the animals actually following the spider into his cottage – and seducing a fairy with whom he has an affair. In this story, the fairy is fascinated by the way the spider managed to build his house out of straw.

In one of the most memorable lines from this story, she asks: "But how did you do it?" In response to this question, the spider shoots her through with an arrow, killing her instantly. "How did you do it?"
